Plot Summary
Suzume Iwato lives with her aunt in Kyushu, haunted by recurring dreams of a ruined world. Her life changes dramatically when she meets a young man searching for abandoned places with mysterious doors. Opening one such door releases a supernatural threat—an enormous earthquake-spawning entity known as the Worm.
Drawn into a nationwide quest, Suzume and the now-cursed Souta—transformed into a three-legged animated chair—travel across Japan, sealing dangerous portals to prevent large-scale destruction. Along the way, they encounter Daijin, a whimsical cat-like keystone spirit whose actions set off the chain of disasters.
Their journey spans Ehime, Kobe, and Tokyo, revealing ancient traditions, interdimensional gateways, and the tragic history of the Worm. As the stakes rise, Souta becomes the new keystone, sacrificing himself to stop a catastrophic event in Tokyo. Determined to save him, Suzume seeks answers in her destroyed hometown in Tōhoku, where she once encountered the gateway as a child during the 2011 tragedy.
Inside the mystical Ever-After, Suzume rescues Souta with the help of Daijin and Sadaijin, restoring balance and resealing the Worm. She also confronts her younger self, offering solace and closure from the trauma of her past.
A year later, destiny reunites Suzume and Souta at the very place where their extraordinary journey began—quiet, gentle, and full of promise.
