Dangal, translating to “Wrestling Bout,” is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao under Aamir Khan Productions, in collaboration with Siddharth Roy Kapur of The Walt Disney Company India. Starring Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat, the film tells the inspiring true story of a father who trains his daughters, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, to become India’s first world-class female wrestlers. Production & Development:
The film’s journey began in 2013 when Tiwari started scripting the story. After Aamir Khan interviewed the Phogat sisters on his talk show Satyamev Jayate, he joined the project as lead actor and producer. Principal photography began in September 2015 in Punjab, while the story is set in Haryana. Cinematography by Satyajit Pande, editing by Ballu Saluja, and a stirring score by Pritam with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya contributed to the film’s authentic feel. Plot Summary:
Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former amateur wrestler, dreams of a son who will win international medals. Disappointed to have daughters, he initially gives up hope until his eldest daughters, Geeta and Babita, demonstrate extraordinary wrestling talent. Determined to train them, Mahavir subjects them to rigorous exercises, early morning workouts, and unconventional training methods. Despite village backlash, the sisters embrace wrestling and gradually rise through state and national competitions.
Geeta eventually faces challenges at the National Sports Academy, where her coach Pramod Kadam introduces new techniques, causing initial failures. With Babita’s support and Mahavir’s secret coaching, Geeta regains her confidence. In a climactic Commonwealth Games match, Geeta executes a decisive 5-pointer in the final seconds, winning India’s first gold medal in female wrestling and fulfilling her father’s dream.

Dangal premiered in the United States on 21 December 2016 and released worldwide on 23 December 2016, with dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu titled Yuddham. It was declared tax-free in six Indian states to support the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.
