Plot Summary
The United States is under a totalitarian military regime facing a deep economic depression. Each year, one boy from every state is chosen for the Long Walk. Raymond “Ray” Garraty from Maine begins the journey despite his mother's desperate pleas. Along the marathon, friendships, rivalries, breakdowns, and brutal state enforcement shape the psychological tension of the story. One by one, walkers fall—some from exhaustion, some from despair, some from violence.
After five days and more than 300 miles, only Ray and Pete remain. The climactic finale ends with sacrifice, vengeance, and a symbolic act of rebellion that echoes long after the walk ends.
