The 2025 fantasy adventure film brings back a legendary tale of magic and steel, reimagined by writer-director Steven Kostanski. As a modern revival of the 1983 cult classic, the new version stars Daniel Bernhardt in the lead role, joined by Patton Oswalt, Christina Orjalo, Paul Lazenby, and Nina Bergman. Executive producer Peter Kuplowsky adds a touch of nostalgic credibility to this bold reinvention.
The film made its world premiere at the 78th Locarno Film Festival on August 15, 2025, followed by a U.S. theatrical release on October 10, 2025. Its story opens on a war-torn battlefield where a former knight scavenges among the fallen, unknowingly setting fate in motion when he picks up a mysterious golden amulet. No matter how many times he tries to discard it, the amulet keeps returning—an omen of trouble yet to come.
A two-headed troll attacks him, ancient magic stirs, and whispers of a rising evil begin to haunt his path. Seeking answers, he visits the witch Toralva, who warns him that the amulet is bound to his life and can only be understood by a powerful wizard. Skeptical yet determined, he enters a deadly cave system, fights man-eating serpents, and frees the imprisoned wizard Doodad. Though unable to read the amulet’s script, Doodad agrees to help him retrieve a forgotten scroll from a dead sorcerer’s crypt.
Their journey reveals a frightening truth: the ancient necromancer Necronemnon has returned, and his monstrous army wants the amulet. Deadly dreadites stalk them, led by the knight’s former friend Jotak—now transformed into a terrifying warrior.
After infiltrating the crypt disguised as corpses and teaming up with the crafty thief Brisbayne, the group escapes with the scroll. Their path winds through the haunted Moaning Woods, where stone titans and cursed mummies attack, leaving the hero injured. During the night, Doodad breaks the amulet’s bond and uncovers a prophecy foretelling a magical sword capable of destroying Necronemnon.
But betrayal comes swiftly. Brisbayne turns them over to the thief-queen Grendul, only for swamp monsters to interrupt the interrogation in chaotic fashion. Through luck and quick thinking, the hero escapes and disguises himself as Grendul to negotiate with Prince Baldur—who promptly double-crosses him. Chaos erupts as dreadites ambush the meeting, and in the brutal fight that follows, Jotak kills both Deathstalker and the prince.
Miraculously, the swamp creatures revive him, guiding him back into battle. In the climactic showdown, he storms Necronemnon’s fortress, frees Doodad, and confronts the necromancer and his monstrous lieutenant. A collapsing cavern injures the villain, but not before Brisbayne becomes a vessel for the demon Citor.
At the final moment, the hero recovers the prophesied sword and destroys Citor, restoring Brisbayne to life and wiping out the dreadite threat. With peace restored, he chooses to destroy the powerful sword—though Doodad’s famously terrible aim makes the task unexpectedly comedic.
This modern retelling blends classic sword-and-sorcery energy with fresh cinematic style, offering fans a thrilling return to a beloved fantasy legend.
