Plot Summary
In the Second Age of Middle-earth, the lords of Elves, Dwarves, and Men each receive Rings of Power. But the Dark Lord Sauron secretly forges the One Ring in Mount Doom, giving him dominion over all life. A great war in Mordor sees Isildur of Gondor defeat Sauron, cutting the Ring from his hand. Yet the Ring corrupts him, and he is slain by Orcs. For 2,500 years, the Ring is lost, until it is claimed by Gollum, and later by a hobbit of the Shire: Bilbo Baggins.
Decades later, Bilbo leaves the Ring to his nephew Frodo Baggins, guided by the wizard Gandalf the Grey. Soon Gandalf learns that Sauron’s servants, the Nazgûl, are searching for Frodo. With loyal Samwise Gamgee, and friends Merry and Pippin, Frodo begins his perilous journey. They are aided by the ranger Aragorn (Strider), heir to Gondor’s throne.
At Rivendell, the Council of Elrond forms the Fellowship of the Ring: Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Boromir. Their quest takes them through the Mines of Moria, where Gandalf faces the mighty Balrog, sacrificing himself. The Fellowship continues to Lothlórien, where Galadriel warns of the Ring’s corruption.
At Parth Galen, Boromir succumbs to temptation, falling in battle against the Uruk-hai leader Lurtz. Aragorn avenges him, vowing to protect Gondor. Frodo resolves to go to Mordor alone, but Sam insists on accompanying him. Thus, the Fellowship is broken, and the journey to destroy the One Ring of Power truly begins.
